What She’d Like to Tell Him, Four Years Later

The sky burned away in a cold flame

That reached out to the blemished, endless vastness.

The stars didn’t feel as bright as they used to.

At that moment, the world was melting.

You, love, were at the precipice of Now and Forever,

Here and There,

Breathing In and breathing Out.

Like a beached whale,

Waiting for the end.

I can’t let go, even now,

Of the feeling that it very nearly stopped there.

(Sometimes I even feel like it did,

Because something did die that day.)

From time to time,

I ask myself–and I curse myself for asking–

If that had been the last of it,

Would it have been that bad?

Not because I resent these days we’ve had,

But because I felt…something in that moment,

A sudden guiding light which struck me:

We’d reached romance’s end.

We are living in the epilogue.

Well.

Perhaps that’s alright.

Not everything can be a story.
