Talking to Herself, Lying Awake at Night
I was so tired.
Cold as the branches tore my skin,
I ran through the woods.
I pulled the pelt tight,
Felt a loose hoof bump against my leg.
I hadn’t prepared for the smell.
I was so tired.
I sat down by the side of a river
On a hard stump,
Feet devastated by the rocks.
I was so tired.
I was tired beyond tiredness,
So tired I couldn’t sleep.
I stared down at the river,
The water like melted glass,
Half-revealing a hazy world beneath.
I could hear it rush against the rocks behind me,
And I wanted to wrap myself in that sound.
It played like a loop in my ears,
Pushing me down and up and down and up again.
I was so tired.
…Lying here now,
I reach for the pelt to help me hide.
